Happy New Year to you! Like other media, I’m taking a look back. Of course I’m going to take a little further look back and recap what happened around Winfield in 1971. The following picture/articles were taken from the January 5th, 1972 edition of the Glimpses. (click each to enlarge)
and if that wasn’t enough, I’ll have more on Monday…have a great weekend!

Here’s an interesting commentary/review of a village board meeting from July of 1973. Glimpses Managing Editor Elmer Ill Jr. summarizes the meeting in his column as you’ll see below. (click to enlarge)

A string of burglaries rocked the village back in October of 1971. Read all about it below.
and in a separate note from the Fire Department (from the same Glimpses issue)…

Heading into the Christmas weekend I thought we could take a little jaunt back in time to the 1975 Winfield holiday house walk. Enjoy the Glimpses pictures and words as they take us to a variety of homes in the village. From December 17th, 1975…click each segment to enlarge…and stay tuned at the end for a couple Christmas oriented local ads from the same paper. Merry Christmas to you all and see you next week!

That’s how Mt. Trashmore (oops, I mean Mt. Hoy) at the Blackwell Forest Preserve was being sold back in the 70’s. I remember as a kid reading about this and thinking how cool it was going to be skiing and tobogganing at a nearby park. Little did I know that all I would get is a lame inner tube ride years later. Oh well, some plans just never seem to work out. Anyways, here’s an interesting Glimpses article about the “mountain” from October of 1973. (click article to ease your reading)
This article doesn’t mention it, but Blackwell also had an ambitious Summer “beach” complex in the mid 70’s. That is until the garbage from Mt. Hoy leached into the facility and they had to shut it down.

I saw these picture/articles regarding the Winfield Juniors Spring activities and thought it would be nice to read about as we head into Winter this week. The pictures also provide a cool view of downtown Winfield circa May of 1972. (click each to enlarge)

Wow, talk about different times. Apparently, back in its earlier days, the Central DuPage Hospital used to solicit residents and civic groups for money to expand facilities and to purchase the latest equipment. It’s all detailed in today’s post from the Glimpses December 17, 1975 edition. (click each segment for easier reading)

I picked up a copy of the October 5th, 1966 issue of the Glimpses the other day and found these short but interesting items on the front page. None were particularly great for a stand-alone post…but together I thought they would be excellent. Enjoy. (click each to enlarge)

Here’s an interesting feature story about Winfield’s police chief Lee Griffey from the pages of the Glimpses December 10, 1963 edition. (The article is divided into several sections…click each to enlarge)
This photo was also used in the Glimpses when Griffey resigned.

Back in December of 1973, the village board decided to not light the town Christmas tree because of the “energy crisis” of the day. The Glimpses editor had a different opinion and voiced it in the papers editorial column. (posted for your perusal below)
And as an added bonus, the following picture features this years “lighted” village tree, that I took the other night. Have a good weekend!
