A-Bombs & Winfield’s Water Supply

June 27, 2012

What would happen if an A-bomb hit Winfield’s water supply? That was a question that the townsfolk were asked to address at a special meeting back in November of 1949…(click to enlarge)

I’ll have to keep my eye open for a follow up article on this issue…hopefully they didn’t spend a lot of time or money on a plan.

Even More Glimpses Of Winfield Women

June 22, 2012

I like these articles from the Glimpses “women’s page”…I’ve run a couple in the past (see here, and here). Today we meet Lena Berkes and her recipes (the dandelion wine looks good), Alice Neubauer gearing up for Good Ole Days, and an actual pattern to make your own bonnet. From August of 1968…(click each to enlarge)

Tribute To Alyce Bartlett

June 18, 2012

I was saddened to hear that Alyce Bartlett died last week. According to her obituary Mrs. Bartlett began her career at the Winfield Glimpses in 1967. I’m sure I’ve read hundreds of her articles, but unfortunately the Glimpses didn’t credit each article, so I don’t know exactly which were hers (as I would’ve liked to have posted a few today). Mrs. Bartlett was listed in the information box of the paper in August of 1967…

I never met Alyce Bartlett, but I wish I could have thanked her for all her work in covering Winfield over the decades. She helped greatly in preserving the history of our town.

Personally I’d like to get the oiler…Have a great weekend!

Early Days Of The Plan Commission

June 8, 2012

and today’s post is brought to you by Ray Roberts Steakhouse….

the restaurant is long gone…but the property was used to house a temporary “gas station” for a scene in the old Blues Brothers movie.
