November 29, 2013

Back in May of 1975, the Glimpses took us for a behind the scenes look at Franks Finer Foods meat department…

Time For Thanks

November 27, 2013

It’s Thanksgiving time again, and I’d just like to say that I am thankful for these old Glimpses newspapers. They have informed and entertained me for many years (keep in mind that I’m easily entertained). I’m also thankful for the readers of this blog, I hope that you too are being entertained and informed on some level. Now for the cover from 1968…followed up with an ad for a store that was open on Thanksgiving…

Rare Headline

November 25, 2013

Today’s Glimpses story features a headline that you won’t see anytime soon, thanks to our new president Erik Spande and trustees Jack Bajor, James McCurdy and Phillip Mustes. Last week these fellas decided to give us a tax increase without our having a say in the matter (via referendum)…and here I thought they were all about “listening to the residents.” Sadly I predicted this outcome back in April, and I hate to say it but I don’t think they are done…look for more tax increases in the near future and new fees (vehicle stickers). At least now we know what the “change” was in their campaign slogan of “need all 4 for change.”
Anyway, let’s take a look back to September of 1969 when the Winfield village board eliminated a tax levy…no to levy

A General Tale

Winfield Was A Hairy Place

November 20, 2013

During Good Ole Days, they used to have a beard growing contest. Here’s the article announcing the contest in August of 1969…

They also included a companion piece giving a brief history lesson in beards…

and if you’re wondering how the beards turned out in 1969…here they are…

Roots Of The Library

November 18, 2013

Here’s an article/pictorial from the early days of the Winfield Public Library. Lots of volunteers lead to its creation as we learn from the Glimpses October 15th, 1969 edition…

Boob Tube Poll

November 15, 2013

I thought this one was a fun read. The Glimpses ran a column called “The Question Box” in the 1960’s written by Arliss Ann Chase. In the following piece she revealed the results of her poll, asking Winfield residents what television programs they liked…(March of 1966)

and if you were needing a TV to watch these programs, you might’ve gone to Ron’s…

and because the slogan in this ad caught my eye as I perused the paper…I’m also including it today…

Sarcastic V Board Coverage

November 13, 2013

Love it or hate it the Winfield Village Board usually entertains and/or boggles the mind…and that is definitely something that hasn’t changed over the years…as evidenced by this Glimpses coverage of the board in February of 1966…

a most informative night

and here’s a recipe from the same issue for something called “chicken imperial”…it actually sounds pretty good…if you try it let me know.

Rowdies Around In The 50’s

November 8, 2013

I always like hearing how great everything and everyone was back in the 1950’s. Check out how great things were around the Winfield school in this piece from October of 1959…

A stolen drinking fountain!? Sounds like they needed the video surveillance that the school now touts in its backyard.

Anyway….since that was such a short article…how about a couple bonus ads from the same paper?…Ed’s Corn Crib and a PSA about fume free dryers…
