Year End Review

December 31, 2012

Happy New Year! I’m going to join the throngs of media types providing some sort of year end review. My version will involve the second half of 1967. Let’s look back a little bit today and then again on Wednesday (oh wait, we’re always looking back on this site)…from the January 10, 1968 Glimpses…

Man Of The Year!

December 28, 2012

Back in early 1970, Joe Jedlovec Sr. was named “man of the year” (of 1969) by the Holy Name Society. All the details are featured in three sections from the Glimpses January 14, 1970…

Rain On The Way?

December 19, 2012

I was just reading a pretty wild weather forecast for our area where we’ll get either a lot of rain, a lot of snow or both in the next couple days (although i suspect it’ll be neither). Anyways, as I was flipping through the Glimpses, I noticed this picture/article from October 1972 of some flooding on East Street. I always like to remind myself of Winfield’s flooding potential to keep me on my toes…

’74 Rave Out

December 14, 2012

Then publisher, Ed Petrik, took to the pages of the Glimpses to air his opinions on zoning changes and development. Interesting read from May of 1974…(features some common themes that linger today)….

Safety Expert

December 12, 2012

Bear with me…i’m going to be a bit self-indulgent with today’s post. Normally I probably wouldn’t publish the following article about some kids winning a poster and essay contest…but when I noticed it featured a friend of mine and an avid reader of this blog, I couldn’t resist. Check out Pete Welz in the front row of this front page article from November of 1971…

I’d sure like to know what was on that winning poster.

Attempt At Decency In Winfield

December 10, 2012

A local group of the “Movement to Restore Decency” (or MOTOREDE) held a meeting in Winfield back in April of 1969. The Glimpses gave us a look at what the group hoped to accomplish…
