In May of 1963, the Glimpses ran a rendering of the forthcoming Abbey nursing home in Winfield…
It was built, closed down many years later…became the Marklund Deicke Home for awhile…and now the building is gone and the property for sale…

It’s Memorial Day 2014…but today I’m going back to March 1st 1966 when the Glimpses ran a piece about local resident Steve Billman who was getting close to being shipped out to Vietnam. Steve had a poem published along with the article and I thought I would share it with you…
and this Memorial Day special is brought to you by the Winfield Restaurant…

I was intrigued by this “Believe It or Not” article in the Glimpses October 1966 issue…
It was sent to the Glimpses by a reader…
I thought it would be fun to find this tombstone and post a picture of what it looks like today…unfortunately I’ll have to go to Winfield, Alabama to accomplish that…and it doesn’t look like I’m going to be down that way any time soon.
I did go to the two cemeteries that the reader thought the stone might be in, but after coming up empty, I did a little research online and that’s when I found out the story is from Winfield, Alabama and not Winfield, Illinois. Here’s a link to a site that talks about the legend…
Bottom line…don’t believe everything you read in newspapers.
