Cool Old Pics

June 20, 2014

Technically I shouldn’t be posting these pictures, because they come from the Examiner instead of the Glimpses…but what the heck, I like ’em and I want to share ’em. This Examiner issue had info about the upcoming Good Ole Days celebration and as was the case with the Glimpses, they liked to showcase old photos relative to Winfield. Here are the ones that were published in September of 1977…

“No” in ’59 – “Yes” in ’13

March 8, 2013

Too bad the village didn’t have better vision back in 1959. A “yes” vote then might have alleviated some of the tussles we are having now. Check out this article from December 8, 1959. You’ve got to love the reasons, that the zoning board came up with, on why the South-West corner of Roosevelt and Winfield Roads should not be rezoned. My favorite’s are numbers 2, 3 and 6…what are yours?

Big Flood Of ’72 (Part Two)

April 4, 2012

As promised Monday, here is the second post about the floods that hit Winfield back in August of 1972. The Glimpses featured another six photo’s (which can be seen below), in addition to the article and photo’s featured in Monday’s post. (click each to enlarge)

County Shuns Winfield Road As Extension Route

June 15, 2011

That was the big headline Glimpses readers were faced with on October 1, 1963. The article shows an attempt by some Winfield businessmen to try and get a proposed north-south route from Roosevelt Road to North Avenue, changed from County Farm Road to Winfield Road. While we know now how things turned out, it makes you wonder how things would’ve been different for Winfield had the change been made. (click each section to enlarge)

Weird Coincidence

January 7, 2011

I’m constantly reading through my collection of The Winfield Glimpses newspapers looking for interesting articles to post here. I also like to check in on another local blog called to see what they are talking about. This week they’ve been discussing zoning and the corners of Roosevelt and Winfield Roads. Meanwhile, I was in my basement and I came across a stack of Glimpses issues I haven’t even touched yet. Lo and behold on top of the pile was the October 1, 1959 edition with an article that screamed to be scanned and posted…so here it is…

Do you feel Winfield Road should be extended to North Avenue?

December 13, 2010

We now know the answer to that question but back in the Fall of 1963 The Winfield Glimpses posed this question to residents and businessmen. Here are the pros and cons as presented in the November 5th edition of the paper.
